No, you do not need a referral. Clients can self-refer or be referred by a GP or other allied health practitioner. However, if you wish to claim a rebate on a Mental Health Care Plan then you will need a referral from a GP (see ‘What is a Mental Health Care Plan?’ for more details).

You may be eligible to access partial rebates through Medicare or make a claim through your Private Health fund. If you wish to access partial rebates through Medicare, you will need to ensure you have a valid referral that specifies exactly what type of Psychological service is required and to quote the item number so that we are able to bill you accordingly. To obtain a referral, you will need to book an appointment with your GP – you may need a longer appointment, so please check with your GP when booking. You will need to bring your referral to your first psychology session to claim the rebate.
You will need to pay the full amount of the consultation fee when booking your session or at the time of your session. An invoice for your payment will be issued to you and you can then lodge a claim directly with Medicare. If accepted you will receive your rebate into your registered cheque or savings account.
Some psychological therapy services may be eligible for rebates through your Private Health Insurance extras cover. Please note that Private Health funds vary widely in the amount of rebate that can be claimed and you should contact your insurer about this. Upon payment of your fees, Seen and Heard Psychology can provide you with a receipt that you can submit to your health insurer for a rebate. Please let us know at the time of payment if you would like the private health care code added to your receipt. NOTE: You are unable to use Medicare and your Private Health insurance for the same consultation.

A Mental Health Care Plan outlines what type of healthcare support is needed, and what you and your doctor have agreed you are aiming to achieve. A Mental Health Care Plan entitles you to Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual and 10 group appointments with psychological services in a year. Referral can be made by a GP under a Mental Health Care Plan (GP Item 2710) or by referral directly from a psychiatrist or paediatrician. Note that you will need to revisit your GP or referring specialist after the 6th session for re-referral for a review.

When appointments are booked, the psychologist reserves the session time especially for you. Therefore, the following cancellation policy is in place to allow us to offer the allocated time to another person, who may be on a waiting list for that appointment and to keep your costs down. A courtesy SMS reminder will be sent to clients a few days prior to your appointment; however we still expect clients to remember their appointments and arrive on time.
You can contact Seen and Heard by email or phone to reschedule or cancel your appointment if you are unable to attend.
We require 48 hours notice to reschedule or cancel a session in order to offer appointments to other clients on the waiting list and to prevent incurring any extra fees. Clients who fail to turn up to their appointment or cancel within 48 business hours of their appointment will be charged the full appointment fee.
This charge cannot be claimed through Medicare or your Private Health fund.
We understand that you may be unable to keep an appointment because of sudden illness or an emergency. If this happens to you, please contact us as soon as possible.

Seen and Heard Psychology does not currently provide medico-legal reports or bulk-billed appointments.
Only clients who have self-managed NDIS packages may use their funding to cover or partially cover the fees for services at Seen and Heard Psychology. The Psychologists at Seen and Heard Psychology are not registered providers of services under the NDIS. Therefore, clients who have packages managed directly by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) are unable to use their NDIS funds to pay for services at Seen and Heard Psychology.

Only the parents and/or caregivers need attend the first few sessions. In the first session, your psychologist will focus on obtaining background information, understanding the presenting concerns, and discussing the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) program.
The following sessions—typically the first two to three after your initial visit— will follow Steps 1 and 2 of CPS approach. More details can be seen here https://livesinthebalance.org/parents-and-families-tour/. After this introductory period, both the parents/caregivers and their children will participate in Step 3 of the CPS approach, with the child involved for most of the time unless a parent only session becomes required.
-
The number of sessions each family or individual requires varies greatly depending on the level of need and presenting concerns. On average, you can expect at least 12 sessions using CPS as the main therapeutic approach. Weekly or fortnightly sessions are recommended to allow for regular review of the use of the CPS method at home. The progress of each client can be discussed with the psychologist at anytime during the sessions.
-
Initially, face to face sessions are recommended to help build rapport between the psychologist and the client. If the need for a telehealth session arises, this can be discussed with Seen and Heard Psychology to determine if it is appropriate. A Zoom session may be conducted provided it is appropriate and there is access to a strong internet connection and an appropriate location.
